5 tips for decorating a Coastal style home! | Gold Coast Interior Design

by Bec Lawson |

With many of our clients based on the sunny Gold Coast, Tweed Coast or beautiful Byron Bay, it makes sense that Coastal style homes have become so popular! After all, this style is inspired by the sea, so our coastal location makes it the perfect decorating style to reflect our surroundings.

We love styling and designing Coastal style homes. Light, airy, modern and relaxed - it’s a classic style that will remain timeless for many years to come.

So how exactly can you achieve a Coastal style home for yourself? It all comes down to choosing the right colours, textures, furniture and furnishings to help bring this look to life. Read on for our top styling tips to decorate your very own Coastal style home, along with some inspiration to get you started!

  1. Work with a neutral colour palette for your base

Coastal style interior decorating is always centred around a neutral, soft colour palette. When you walk into a Coastal style home, the first thing you’ll usually notice is the crisp white walls and timber floorboards. It’s all about keeping things light, bright and breezy.

Along with the whites and timbers, you’ll also find more neutral colours like cream, sand and ivory, complimented by beachy colours like navy and other soft blues. Think about the kind of colours you see at the beach and by the sea - these are the colours that you should be implementing in order to achieve a true Coastal feel throughout the home.

2. Include natural and organic textures

Another key feature to creating a Coastal style home is to include furniture and decor in natural textures. You’ll want to include organic materials like rattan, wicker, jute, linen and timber when it comes to furnishing your home.

Layering these natural textures will also help to create a sense of warmth and comfort, so don’t be afraid to mix and match these materials. Pieces like jute rugs, linen sofas, rattan baskets and timber tables all work well together in a Hamptons style home.

3. Be inspired by the sea

The Coastal style is all about drawing inspiration from the beach, so think about how you can bring some coastal elements into your space. This could be through decor like patterned vases, driftwood, even pieces of coral. Keep it subtle though - these details should compliment the space, rather than overwhelm it.

4. Light it up!

Lighting is a huge feature of any Coastal style home. The more natural light, the better, so steer away from details like heavy draping and instead keep your window treatments as minimal as possible. Exposed windows or sheer cotton drapes work best.

When it comes to pendant lights and other light fittings, we love basket or woven lights to help bring some more natural texture into the space. Or for a more traditional Coastal look, metal fixtures in white or steel can be a beautiful contrast.

5. Inject blue into your colour palette through artwork and accessories

Artwork can be a great way to tie all of your design elements together and create a cohesive look that flows throughout the home. When choosing art for a Coastal style home, shades of blue tend to work best to really highlight that beachy feel. Any artwork that reminds you of the beach or the ocean is always going to be a winner!
