Home office ideas: How to create a beautiful and functional office at home! | Gold Coast Interior Design

by Nicole Smith |

A home office is one of the trickiest rooms of the house to get just right! Unlike other areas of our homes that are designed for relaxing - like our living rooms and bedrooms - a home office is designed for work and productivity. Your home office should be a creative and inspiring place that you genuinely enjoy being in, to encourage a positive working environment.

It can be difficult to stay motivated and focused if you’re working in a cluttered, impractical or uninspiring space. With so many people working from home these days, we thought we’d put together some of our top tips to decorate an office that is both beautiful AND functional.

Whether you run your own business, study from home or simply just use the space to catch up on emails and bookkeeping, take a look at some of our favourite home office styling tips below.

Keep your space organised

A clean, tidy and organised space is an absolute must when it comes to decorating your home office. Too much clutter or too many unnecessary items in your home office can be a huge distraction.

Take some time to really clean out your office space, only keeping the key pieces that are essential to your productivity and inspiration. Make sure everything has a home - stationery, files, paper and folders should all be kept organised in storage units (we love rattan baskets for a relaxed look).

Try to keep your actual desk space as clear as possible - there is nothing more unproductive than trying to work from a messy desk! If you have the space available, a console table, shelving unit or bookcase is another great way to keep clutter away from your desk and instead neatly displayed and easily accessible.

Choose a statement desk and chair

Most of the time, home offices are one of the smallest rooms in the house - they may even be tucked into a side nook, under the stairs or at the end of a hallway. If you don’t have ample space to work with, we recommend choosing a statement office desk and office chair to become the focal point of the room and maximise the space that you do have available!

We love timber trestle desks for an earthy and organic look, paired with cosy upholstered chairs. White desks with black accents are another great combination for a stylish office space. It’s really important to choose office furniture that you are comfortable with - make sure that the height of your desk and chair are a good match, and that you have enough room to manoeuvre around the space.

Inject some creativity!

This is the fun part - injecting some creativity into the space to help you feel inspired!

We love office spaces that feature colourful artworks, wall clocks and stylish table lamps. Potted plants are a great way to breathe some life and freshness into your space, to avoid your office from feeling too sterile.

Colour psychology is something else to consider when choosing your home office decor. Some of the most popular colours to promote productivity are restful blues and greens, which help to improve concentration and efficiency. For creative professionals like artists and designers, yellow is also renowned for being energising and triggering innovation.
